In this paper I have surveyed on the possible direction in sijo composition by the analysis of Jo Oh-Hyeon's sijo poems. Jo's sijos have attracted much attention as possible alternative model for modern sijo poems. This paper analyses his poems with special attention to their literary form and contents. As a result of this survey I have found that his sijo formats can be useful in the composition of modern sijo poems. His sijo poems adopt both regular and varied forms. They prefer modern rhythms. He intentionally refuses to use the conventional sijo format of 3 sentences with 6 phrases. Instead, he used to accept and expand narrative style of sijo forms. These features of Jo's sijo can be helpfully applied to the variation of modern sijo style.
Three to four syllable-words in one foot in a sijo can restrict a natural rhythm of the Korean language. And six-phrase format, though it is very stable, will also lays limitations on the flexible language structure to express modern thoughts. But, there is one thing we should never forget. That is all these efforts must be made, considering a natural stream of human emotion. These variation efforts should not be adopted for their convenience's sake. In this respect, I think narrative sijos cannot be positively included in the proper area of sijo literature. I think narrative sijo is one of the literary genre which can methodically cover the limitations of regular sijos. For the variation of sijo poems, I think narrative sijos are prerequisite. We must remember that narrative sijos must never be neglected for an ideal form of literary kind. In sijo composition, uses of comtemporary themes are also very important. Jo's sijo have three major modern themes: his argument against snobbishness which reflects his personal concern; his satirical criticism on the civilization which shows his social consciousness; and his eco-feminism. These three features are very much significant as I suppose that they are the high critical alternatives for the sijo writing of the 21st century, which will be a world of individualism and de-centeredness.
Garam Lee Byeong-Gi once proposed his renovative theory of Korean sijo poems. In his proposal, he argued that Korean sijos must creatively seek for varied adaptation in the formative style. I think Jo's free style does not deviate from Garam's ideal sijo format. In addition, we can find many eco-feministic topics in Jo's sijos. This tells us that Jo's sijos can be a good example for Korean contemporary sijos to find a new direction.
