This paper reports the result of a small-scaled experiment testing the assumption that stress of English words is predictable. In the experiment, the subjects were asked to circle an option that fits their pronunciation with focus on stress location of nonsense nouns. The result shows that any of three syllables can be stressed and that penultimate syllables are the most frequently stressed in the test words where the antepenultimate syllables are expected to be stressed according to rules commonly assumed for English nouns.
