독일 초기 불교수용자들의 인종주의와 불교인식 - 쇼펜하우어와 바그너의 경우 - = Racism and Buddhist Perception of Early Buddhist Inhabitants in Germany

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In 19th century the Germans developed indological studies as evidence of their Aryan identitites. They were among the foremost proponents of race theory and antisemitic tendency, which propelled the German nationalism of the 19th century. It is certain that this racist tendency have had an effect on the way of engagement of the German intellectuals with the Buddhist tradition.
This paper focuses on two German intellectuals Schopenhauer and Wagner in the early period of the encounter with Buddhism. It aimed to explore their perceptions of Buddhism, trying to reveal their motifs of enthusiasm and imagination of Buddhism. In particular it examined the role of their race theory in their understanding of Buddhism.
It is an undeniable fact that they were full of enthusiasm about Buddhism. But it is not surprising that Buddhism in the early period of the introduction has been represented in the Western imagination in a manner that reflects specifically their concerns, interests, aspirations. The works of Schopenhauer and Wager are situated in the context of the mid-nineteenth century to demonstrate not only that it was the Germans, who placed Buddhism on an Aryan pedestal, but that this move was propelled by their aspiration for the reform of Christianity.
