From the very start, Plato's thinking is aims at solving the problem of the state. The ultimate interest of his Republic is the human soul. He concludes that there are three parts of human soul, namely the appetites, the spirit, and reason. He is a builder of souls. Good actions are produced by reason. Reason produces harmony by initiating self-control. Knowledge of the Good is the basis for the new society as well as citizenry. He investigates the virtues of the human soul, and shows their union and perfection in justice. Justice is good in and of itself, not merely for its consequences. It would appear that justice was the ideal to which individuals and the state should aspire. It is not only a goal it is also a method of achieving true harmony in society. Happiness is seen as a form of harmony by Plato. The philosopher is to be a wise man and he is to know what is good. He can produce a healthy polis and a flourishing citizen body. Plato believes that a just social arrangement would concentrate on allocating social roles in society according to aptitude, and this is the basis of his society's arrangement and he claims to be promoting happiness. In order to secure the ideal of just and happy life which would in turn result in a harmonious group, each citizen must be guided into social occupation for which he was best suited. Plato understands that politics is a means to establish institutions that promote ethical development and happy lives for citizens. According to him only those capable of practicing justice will be able to recognize the injustices in the state, and act to eliminate them. Philosophical rulers should exercise their power for the good of citizens. No matter what a state does it neglects educating citizens it can never be improved. In short, Plato understands that the key to political health is to establish a proper education for all citizens.
