癸未中字本 「新刊類編歷擧三場文選對策」의 意義 = A Study on the Significance of The Samjang Munseon Printed by Movable Type Casted by Seojeogwon in Goryeo Dynasty

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In 1992, Cho, Byeong-sun published an article on The Samjang Munseon and on the dates of publication by movable type casted during the Goryeo dynasty. He emphasized that The Samjang Munseon was published between the period of the late Goryeo dynasty and early Joseon Dynasty. He assumed that the Goryeo dynasty edition was published as early as in 1341 and no later than 1370 in the late Goryeo dynasty. The Joseon Dynasty edition was published in as early as 1403 and no later than 1420 in the early Joseon Dynasty. And he defined the movable types used for printing The Samjang Munseon were not Gye-mi movable type casted in Joseon Dynasty in 1403, but the one casted earlier by Seojeogwon in the late Goryeo dynasty.
There was a counterargument to this point of view, however the research did not progress any further, because The Samjang Munseon was kept in a private library. But I had an opportunity to investigate these rare books, and I had supplemented a few loose ends on the year of publications, movable types used and the significance of these books.
Through an actual inspection, I was confident that The Samjang Munseon were printed in type casted by Seojeogwon of the Goryeo dynasty. So I collected research materials of the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty, and compared the books printed in type casted by Seojeogwon of Goryeo dynasty, i.e. The Sasi Chan-yo, The Sipchil Sachan Gogeum Tong-yo and The Songjo Pyojeon Chongryu.
As a result, I concluded that the movable types used to print The Samjang Munseon were not necessarily Gye-mi movable types that were casted in the Joseon Dynasty. Because the medium sized Gye-mi movable types casted in the Goryeo dynasty differ from Gye-mi movable types casted in the Joseon Dynasty in shape and form, number of lines and characters, edge lines, size of characters and degree of corrosion. So the types of medium and small size used in the books printed with Gye-mi movable type were casted by Seojeogwon of Goryeo dynasty and supplemented by the new ones casted in Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty.
The Samjang Munseon printed in the Goryeo dynasty is regarded as one of the last printed books printed by the Goryeo dynasty’s official movable types, and it is one of the first printed books printed by the Joseon Dynasty’s official movable types. Therefore, The Samjang Munseon printed by the medium sized Gye-mi movable types is an important material providing the missing link between the movable types of the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty.
