This study focuses on the presentation of ‘sentence construction methods’ according to the ‘discourse constituent factors’ in the representative functional grammar books of the North, ‘Sentence Construction Theory (2nd Edition)’ (2010, 2014) and ‘Functional Grammar of Joseon Language’ (2013), which focuses on ‘sentence construction’ rather than ‘sentence analysis’ from the perspective of ‘expressive grammar’, which may seem unfamiliar in the South Korea.
Among the ‘speaker, listener, context, and text’ factors that constitute ‘discourse’, the ‘speaker factor’, ‘point-of-view, topic, and emphasis’, we focused on ‘point-of-view’ to examine the issue of ‘point-of-view and sentence construction’.
‘Point-of-view’ is mainly used as a literary term, and it is not often used in South Korean grammar (education) descriptions, but in ‘Sentence Construction Theory’ (2010, 2014) and ‘Functional Grammar of Joseon Language’ (2013), ‘point-of-view’ is a concept related to the speaker's position in sentence construction, and it is a matter of ‘whether the speaker or the listener, who is a participant in the language act, deals with the sentence in the process of sentence construction’. This is quite different from the South Korean grammar (education) discussion, which is limited to the grammatical categories of ‘tense’ or ‘aspect’, in that it is a North Korean grammar (education) discussion that focuses on the language user, speaker or listener as a participant in the discourse in the process of specific communicative acts. This can be seen as a result of the fact that grammar (education) descriptions in South Korea are often based on a ‘formalism’ perspective that focuses on ‘language form’, while in North Korea, grammar (education) descriptions are often based on a ‘functionalism’ perspective that considers ‘language use’ or ‘speech acts’. It was also found that ‘point-of-view’ influences ‘subject selection’ and ‘predicates constraints’ in ‘sentence construction’.
