마키아벨리의 역사사상 = 『피렌체사』와 메디치 가문

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 마키아벨리가 『피렌체사』에서 메디치 가문을 평가한 내용과 방식을 통해서 그가 가지고 있었던 정치와 역사에 대한 입장을 규명하려는 목적을 가지고 있다. 또한 역사에 대한 마키아벨리의 구체적인 생각을 찾는데 『로마사 논고』의 도움을 받으려고 한다. 죽기 전까지 공직 복귀에 대한 희망을 버리지 않았던 마키아벨리에게 그 결정권을 쥐고 있는 메디치 가문 출신의 교황 레오 10세의 『피렌체사』 저술 의뢰는 절호의 기회였다. 그러나 피렌체가 쇠퇴한 원인을 규명하고 개혁 방향을 제시하는 내용을 담고 있는 『피렌체사』와 관련해서 의문스러운 점은, 메디치 가문의 주요 인물들인 코지모와 로렌초에 대해서 마키아벨리가 아첨하지 않고 그 책임을 적시하고 있다는 점이다. 특히 재산에 기반한 피호관계를 이용하여 파벌을 만들어서 피렌체의 법과 공적 질서를 문란케 한 것을 피렌체의 국력이 약해진 주요 원인으로 지적하고 있다. 마키아벨리가 당면한 이해관계에도 불구하고 솔직하게 자신의 생각을 썼던 것은 그가 현실에 유익한 교훈을 제공하는 것을 역사의 존재 목적으로 보았고, 또 그가 『피렌체사』 저술에서 가장 중요하게 여긴 가치도 피렌체 정치현실 개혁을 위한 청사진을 제시하는 것이었기 때문이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to show Machiavelli’s views on history through revealing the contents and ways that Machiavelli uses to assess the Medici in Florentine Histories. And while doing this job I will get aids from his Discourses on Livy.
In 1520 Pope Leo X ordered Machiavelli to write a history of Florence. The commission by a Medici who had the right to decide whether Machiavelli could return to public service was a golden opportunity for Machiavelli. However, what is questionable about Machiavelli’s Florentine Histories which has the contents of finding causes of the decline of Florence and providing solutions of its reform is that Machiavelli points out without adjustments the responsibility of the Medici for the corruption of Florence. Especially, Machiavelli blames the family for weakening the laws and the public order through establishing patronage system predicated on enormous wealth.
The reason why Machiavelli wrote his thoughts frankly regardless of urgent demands is that he regards the offering of the lessons useful for the reality as the raison d’?tre of history, and the value which he cherished most in writing Florentine Histories was the suggesting of the blueprint for the reform of Florentine politics.
