공동체적인 삶과 ‘유산’(Heritage)의 의미에 대한 사회과학적 연구: 제주 마을의 사례를 중심으로 = The Meaning of “Heritage” and Communal Life: A Case Study of a Jeju Village

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study investigates the role of heritage in preserving and revitalizing a community, focusing on “village making projects” on Jeju Island, South Korea. Over time, the concept of heritage has expanded to comprise the entirety of what anthropologists call material culture, whereas immaterial cultural manifestations are now termed intangible heritage. Consequently, the practice of heritage preservation and enhancement has become prominent in contemporary cultural life, both as a focus of investment and a source of political debate around what is to be preserved, represented, remembered, documented, or erased. The concept of heritage is central to the sense of identity of individuals and communities; it configured importantly in the village making projects in Jeju as well. Combined with new trends in tourism, including “dark tourism” and “eco-tourism,” both cultural/historical and natural heritages have become focal points for forging local pride in one’s own village and for striving for the (re)creation of common resources and, therefore, a common future. By examining the interplay between identity, community, heritage, and the commons, this paper will argue for the need to approach heritage itself as a commons, disregarding modern epistemic divisions between nature and culture, objects and humans, culture and economy.
