This study investigates the sequential relationship among movie audiences' nostalgia proneness, transportation into the movie, memorable tourism experience at the film location, and revisit intention. The conceptual model was developed based on a comprehensive literature review. Data were collected from audiences who watched the highly nostalgic film Ode to My Father and subsequently visited the primary filming location, Gukje Market in Busan. The collected data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. The results confirmed that audiences' nostalgia proneness positively impacted transportation into the movie, which, in turn, significantly enhanced memorable tourism experience at the film location, and revisit intention.
Crucially, memorable tourism experience was found to be a significant predictor of revisit intention.
Furthermore, the analysis revealed a significant indirect effect of nostalgia proneness on memorable tourism experience at the film location via transportation. Theoretically, this study expands the scope of nostalgia proneness in tourism research by empirically linking a psychological characteristic (nostalgia) to the depth of audience engagement (transportation). Managerially, the findings offer valuable insights into utilizing movie-induced nostalgia to effectively promote and attract visitors to film tourism destinations. Critical implications for destination marketers are discussed.
