This study is a time series analysis of determinants of income distribution in Japan's urban gouseholds. The analysis focuses upon a series of factors that influence changes in the size distribution of income. The study of the effect of macroeconomic variables on income distribution has been an important concern in recent years. This is partially the result of a growing recognition that inequality should be investigated not just in microeconomic terms, but also along macroeconomic lines. The effects of macroeconomic, demographic, structural and policy variables on the Gini, quintile income shares, and Lorenz ordinates are estimated using more than four decades of annual dara. The results reveal little evidence of any systematic effect of various macroeconomic variables on income distribution Japan.
