The learner-centered style of teaching has recently been emphasized in L2 education. It involves a lot of research about the learner, especially research on student affection; such as language anxiety and motivation.
A great deal has been written in the past about what motivation is. Past research has already described its components, dimensions, and how all these things influence learning. Yet, there is very little information on how this theoretical knowledge can be applied in the classroom. Language-learning research should extend beyond components analysis to motivational strategies for language learners.
During the 1990's, many theories on language learning motivation were developed. So firstly, in the essay I introduce the L2 motivational strategies of Do¨rnyei, a researcher in Hungary. Secondly, in order to gain information on how Korean language teachers view motivational strategies, a questionnaire was developed.
Through the investigation, the following results were found. First, Korean language teachers regard the cognition component as most important for the learner. But all of the teachers agreed that motivation is the most influenced component from all the affection components. Second, most of the motivational strategies are acknowledged for their importance. Although these strategies have many difficulties Korean teachers try their best to use them. Third, though the correlation analysis of the strategy frequency and the teacher's age, antecedent, no statistical results were found.
According to the results, Korean language teachers should have a clear grasp of learner affection and learner motivation. And because of the importance and difficulty of the motivational strategies, they should also have more research on these motivational strategies.
