‘이방인’의 사회학을 위한 이론적 정초

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 주된 목적은 ‘이방인’에 대한 사회학적 묘사이다. 아울러 이러한 ‘이방인’의 사회학적 기술이 사회학(이론)에 기여하는 함의를 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해, 논문에서 주로 의존한 사회학자들은 짐멜, 슈츠, 고프만이다. 전자의 두 학자는 ‘이방인’이라는 주제에 대해서 깊이 천착하여 직접 빼어난 논문을 썼던 사람들이므로 본 논문을 구성하는 데 핵심적인 이론적 틀을 제공해주었다. 반면, 고프만은 명시적으로는 ‘이방인’이라는 주제에 대해 어떠한 언급도 하지 않은 사회학자이나, 그의 몇몇 개념과 그가 정교화시킨 ‘연극무대의 은유’가 ‘이방인’의 특성 규명에 암시하는 바가 적지 않다고 판단되어 준거로 삼았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to draw a vivid portrait of the “Stranger,” which is considered an appealing subject by many distinguished social thinkers as well as many others. Based mainly on the thoughts of Georg Simmel, Alfred Schutz, and Erving Goffman, this paper focuses on the characteristics of the “Stranger” and their contributions to the general sociological theory. Simmel and Schutz dealt directly with the issues of the “Stranger” and provided us with their profound insights into those problems. Goffman does not explicitly address any problem of the “Stranger.” However, I believe their views of human agency and social behavior are necessary and relevant to the analysis of the “Stranger,” thus Goffman is also mentioned in this paper. In order to draw a more accurate picture of the “Stranger,” this paper utilizes the dramaturgical analogy that Goffman manipulated in his earlier work.
