This paper examines the relationship between cross-dressing and homosexuality by tracing trajectories of the English Renaissance theatre and the Japanese Edo kabuki. While cross-dressing, especially a type of practice that male actors impersonate female characters, has had a time-honored tradition that crossed national and cultural boundaries, the homosexual implication and engagement by female impersonators were key factors to societal concerns on theatre stages in both England and Japan during the 17 th century. In reviewing the histories of cross-dressing, I will pay attention to the ways in which cross-dressing practices struggled with heterosexuality-centered patriarchical systems established based on a strict gender dichotomy, and the changes such struggles brought to theatre stages. Specifically, I will discuss that both historical terms - shudo in Japan and sodomy in England - which can be retroactively identified as ‘homosexuality’ implied a very different spectrum of activities from what contemporary ‘homosexuality’ refers to, and social perceptions of them also significantly differed each other and also from the contemporary understanding. My discussion will also illuminate that anti-theatrical discourses and practices reflected ruling classes’ concerns on cross-dressing’s potentially subversive power threatening the strictly stratified social orders, although it may look like that they took issues only with female impersonators’ homosexual implication and engagement. After all, this paper reaffirms the efficacy of the gender perspective in the study of theatre histories by demonstrating that the histories of cross-dressing exemplify the fact that the history of sexuality was written in close interaction with the (re)construction of social orders.
