This study attempted to describe the image of literature education that aims at the formation of ethical subject. Literature education emphasizes the subject`s inner judgment on the question of what the ideal that the subject believes true is. This is distinguished from moral education, which consists of the suggestion of a moral ideal and the learner`s acceptance of the ideal. In this course, authenticity, which is distinguished from sincerity, emerges as an important issue. Authenticity is a new value arising from the process that a modern subject, who attaches importance to individualistic values, feels a gap between his role model of community and his personal desire and overcomes the gap subjectively. In pursuit of authenticity, the subject also collides with social norms that do not understand his truthful inside. This study discussed that the ethics of authenticity is closely related to the structure of novels that assume cracks between the subject and the object and between `I` and others. For the discussion, it analyzed Choi Myeong?ik`s `A Rainy Road.` Byeong-il, the main character of the story, despises people living an ordinary life and puts authenticity out as an important value through confronting reading and truthful inside with the common life. In literature education, the issue of ethics is realized not by commands given to the learner from outside but by autonomous judgments in pursuing the ideal that is believed truthful. That is, novel education aims not at `morality` but at `ethics`.
