Waterlogged wooden artifacts that have been buried for extended periods are highly vulnerable to severe material degradation. Therefore, appropriate conservation treatment is essential to ensure their stable preservation. This study aimed to identify the wood species and implement conservation treatment for the wooden planks and paddle of a wooden log ship excavated from the Jukbyeon site in Uljin. The plate-shaped wooden ship timber was analyzed as Cinnamomum spp. and wooden paddle was Lepidobalanus(Cerris Section). Cinnamomum spp. is a species that thrives in warm climates and is currently found in the southern coastal regions and Jeju Island of Korea. Therefore, it is inferred that the climate of the Dugbyeon site during the Neolithic era(circa 8000 B.C.) was warm enough to support the growth of such species. To assess the degree of deterioration prior to conservation treatment, the maximum moisture content of the wood was measured and found to exceed 900%, indicating severe degradation. As a result, vacuum freeze-drying was deemed unsuitable due to the risk of low structural strength after treatment, which would hinder proper storage and handling. Given the advanced state of deterioration, which was expected to allow effective polymer penetration, the wood was impregnated with 80% PEG#3,350, followed by humidity-controlled drying. This resulted in the stable conservation of the artifacts and proved to be a successful treatment approach.
