As the Industrial society has been changed into the Knowledge-based society, our educational paradigm also needs to be changed from 'teacher-centered' to 'learner-centered.' As the result, in this 7th curriculum, the leveling curriculum is induced enough to do basic and elementary education and to promote elite education, regarding the difference among individuals with reference to the students' ability, interests, aptitude, and course. In this manner, the moving class based on the students' level was conducted, which provided the discriminative class for the appropriate educational disposal to each students. When I took the teaching and learning method of situational learning theory and the performance test for inducing the students' learning motivation and helping the students' learning accomplishments, I studied the changes of the students' learning attitudes and accomplishments.
To do that, the following questions are raised for testing.
1. Are there any meaningful differences between experimental groups' interest in and attitude to mathematics?
2. Are there any positive effect on the learning attitude of the experimental groups applied by the situational learning class?
3. Are there any effect on the learning attitude of the experimental groups?
To solve out all these three questions, I picked 70 high school first graders in Yeoju city as the subjects.
The class for this study was processed with the time of the discretion activities. The three classes of the first graders (10th grade) was conducted with the moving class based on the students' level for mathematics 10-A. One of them was allocated with the supplementary leveling curriculum and other two classes with the deepening leveling curriculum. While one of the two classes was selected as the experimental groups which were taught with the situational teaching-learning sheets after they solved the performance test designated for this study, the other class as the control groups which were taught with the traditional teaching-learning sheets. Four weeks later, I conducted the pre-posttest to the experimental groups for the attitude toward and interest in mathematics, and the accomplishments evaluation to both groups.
For data analysis, the "students' interest in & attitude to math" checkup made prior to and after this experiment, got a paired samples t-test in which the .05 significance level was chosen. Also, after this experiment procedure the learning accomplishments levels from both the control and experimental groups got an independent samples t-test with the same significance level (both sides). To know the change of the students' attitude to a class, their problem solving process of the performance tests was analyzed using mathematical activities sheets of each topic.
As a result of this test the following conclusions were drawn.
First, when it comes to learning accomplishments evaluation both groups got statistically some differences in terms of situation based problem solving abilities but no important differences between them in a SAT test. This reflects that situation based teaching is more closely related to the experiences of our real life than a traditional approaching method and gives more similar situation patterns, thereby allowing students to have effective access to situation based problem solving. But there was no significant difference between both teaching methods in intellect-based (SAT) problem-solving. Judging from these results situation learning methods can help get the knowledge regarding when & how to use such specific information.
Secondly, they say that they have enough time to preview the performance tests which is followed by situational learning theory and they got more opportunities to elevate their interests as doing group discussions and drawing figures by themselves with the teaching methods by situational learning theory.
Third, dislike a traditional teaching method, they showed more interests in mathematics, expressed their opinions actively, and solve the situational problems by the group discussions. As the result of the interview, most evaluations, based on the performance tests and learning attitudes in class time, made students be concerned. Also, like the analysis of the problems of learning accomplishments evaluation, they showed more volition to solve the problems by accessing them logically for the explanation process, not simply for the result, namely answers.
