In December 2023, a large-scale tree bending event occurred in a birch plantation in Wondae-ri, Nam-myeon, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do, South Korea. To investigate the causes of this phenomenon, we selected a 0.25 ha study site near an observation deck and conducted three field surveys. The results indicated that the most severely affected area was on an east-facing slope with a gradient of 20–30°. Analysis of stand structure revealed that trees unaffected by bending damage generally had larger diameters at breast height (DBH), greater tree heights, and were located in areas with gentler slopes. Furthermore, co-dominant trees exhibited more severe bending damage compared to dominant trees in the upper canopy, and the severity of damage increased with higher stand density and a longer period since thinning. To analyze meteorological factors, we utilized observational data from the Korea Meteorological Administration’s ASOS and the Korea Forest Service’s AMOS stations, as well as simulated data from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The analysis indicated that precipitation transitioned from rain to wet snow between December 14 and 16, 2023. Subsequently, a rapid temperature drop from December 16 onward caused the wet snow to freeze onto tree surfaces, followed by strong winds, which ultimately induced tree bending damage. These findings suggest that implementing stand management strategies could help mitigate tree bending damage. Specifically, adjusting stand density through thinning, promoting volume growth to cultivate trees with lower height-to-diameter ratios, and pruning to facilitate wind passage within stands are expected to be effective measures in reducing bending-related damage.
