There exists rising skepticism about the Realist paradigm’s relevance for contemporary international security. Two prevalent perceptions underpin such a critical view. One is that Realist security policies are not only ineffective but also often counterproductive in a rapidly changing new world. The other is that the Realist paradigm cannot adequately explain contemporary security-related phenomena such as terrorism.
This article aims to argue that contrary to this conventional wisdom, Realism still has significant relevance for scholarship and policy-making. For that purpose, it shows that abortive security policies allegedly of a Realist nature, including the US war in Iraq, in fact contradict Realism; and that Realism continues to produce path-breaking researches on current security issues such as terrorism, and maintains the initiative in key scholarly debates with its competitors.
