문화의 다양성 : 뉴욕의 미술 심리 치료 = The Art Therapy in New York - A Variety of Culture-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국 환자들과의 인연은 프랫 대학원을 다니고 있던 실습생 시철, 1994년에 시작되었다. 대부분의 사람들이 생활보장 연금으로 생활을 연명하는 합숙시설에 상주한 정신질환자들을 대상으로 한 치료소에 2년차 실습을 나가게 되었다. 상주인 가운데 과반수를 아시안인들이 차지하며, 그 가운데 스무명 남짓의 한국인이 소속되어 있다. 이들중 반수 이상이 정신 질환에 시달리고 있으며 그들의 증상을 치료하고 지역 생활에 적응을 할수 있도록 도와주는 역할을 이 시설이 맡아 하고 있다. 유학생으로서의 언어의 장벽, 새로운 문화에 대한 이질감과 고립감을 감당하기에 급급할 당시에 이민 생활 끝에 적응하지 못하고 질환에 시달리는 이들을 만난 것이 커다란 충격으로 와 닿았다. 학과의 교수님들과 학우들 그리고 이 시설에서 헌신적으로 봉사하는 직원 여러분들의 이해와 관심, 따뜻한 격려가 아니었다면 지금쯤 필자가 어디에서 무엇을 하고 있을지. 이 실습을 계기로 미술치료에 있어서 문화의 다양성이 미치는 영향에 큰 관심을 갖게 되었고 정신치료에 종사하는 치료자들에게 문화의 다양성에 맞는 적절한 접근 방법을 시도해야 함을 강조하여 왔다. 본 연구에서는 현재 필자가 운명하는 그룹 미술치료 회기들을 모아 문화의 다양성에 따른 인종 그룹들의 반응과 효과의 차이점과 유사점들을 지적하고 미술치료를 통한 적절한 중재 역할을 소개하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

I began my relationship with Korean patients while I was a student at Pratt Institute in 1994. I started my second year internship at the psychiatric day program of the adult home, where most of the residents depend upon Social Security income for theÏr subsistence. Approximately one half of the residents there are Asian, and of those, around twenty are Koreans. The psychiatric day program facilitates mentally ill residents for psychiatric intervention and case management. As a foreign student who was struggling to overcome my own language barrier, cultural differences, and a sense of isolation, I was extremely shocked to meet Korean people who were suffering from mental illnesses so far away from the motherland. If I had not had the encouragement, support and understancling of my professors, fellow students, and coworkers, I wonder whether I would be able to have reached my own present level of achievement. This internship and my personal experience inspired me to focus on cultural diversity in art therapy. As a result, 1 firmly believe that it is very important that clinicians be made aware of cultural differences so prevalent in a multicultural population. In this case study, I present a multicultural art therapy group consisting of schizophrenic patients. I attempted to compare their similarities and differences, and demonstrate intervention techniques utilizing art therapy.
