양극성장애 환자에서 치료에 따른 혈중 콜레스테롤 수치와 충동성의 변화 = Changes of Cholesterol Level and Impulsiveness after Pharmacologic Treatment in Bipolar I Disorder Patients

Objective : Previous studies reported significant relationship between low cholesterol level and impulsiveness. In this study, we investigated the association between serum lipid profiles and impulsiveness, and between changes of total cholesterol level after pharmacologic treatment and changes of impulsiveness in bipolar I disorder patients with manic episode. Methods : Forty bipolar I disorder patients and 36 healthy normal controls were evaluated twice with Korean version of Young Mania Rating Scale (K-YMRS), Clinical Global Impression Scale-severity (CGI-S) and Korean version of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (K-BIS) at admission (pretreatment) and after treatments of 6 weeks (post-treatment). At pretreatment and post-treatment, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels in the patients were measured, and were compared to those of healthy normal controls. Results : TC and LDL levels were significantly higher in post-treatment patients than pretreatment those. After pharmacological treatment, changes of K-YMRS scores only influenced changes of BIS scores were found. Conclusion : This study suggests that the TC levels would be changed after treatment in bipolar patients, although no relationship between change of serum lipid levels and changes of impulsiveness were found. Further examination with larger subjects in longer-term follow up study will be needed.
