This study examines the relationship between national-level institutional characteristics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance, grounded in the institutional theory of Scott(1995).
The three pillars of institutions are operationalized using the Control of Corruption(CC) index for the regulative pillar, the statutory Corporate Income Tax(CIT) rate for the normative pillar, and the Power Distance Index(PDI) for the cognitive-cultural pillar. CSR performance is measured as the mean of the Environmental(E) and Social(S) scores from the Refinitiv ESG database. The final sample consists of 7,755 firm-year observations of listed non-financial firms across 11 countries from 2008 to 2017.
The primary findings are as follows. First, regarding the regulative pillar, countries with higher levels of corruption control exhibit superior environmental performance;however, social performance is higher in countries with lower corruption control. This can be interpreted as an implicit CSR phenomenon, where voluntary corporate activities may be undervalued in environments where social responsibility is already deeply embedded within formal institutions. Second, in terms of the normative pillar, higher statutory corporate tax rates are associated with overall higher CSR performance. This suggests a complementary relationship between tax payments and CSR under institutional frameworks that recognize tax burdens as a form of social contribution. Third, within the cognitive-cultural pillar, egalitarian cultures with low power distance show higher social performance, whereas no significant difference is found in environmental performance. This implies that environmental contributions may be more susceptible to universal global regulatory pressures rather than domestic cultural variations.
The results of this study contribute to the existing literature by providing an integrative analytical framework for CSR determinants through the simultaneous consideration of Scott’s three institutional pillars. Furthermore, by disaggregating CSR performance into environmental and social dimensions, this research identifies the differential impacts of institutional factors across CSR domains. Finally, by employing the corporate tax rate as a normative proxy, this study holds significant policy implications by reinterpreting the nexus between taxation and CSR through the lens of institutional theory.
