This study explored the potential of integrating text and images to understand evolving consumer preferences by investigating the relationship between images and affective vocabulary. To achieve this, collage image creation activities, surveys, and interviews were conducted to collect participants’ preferences as both visual and verbal data. The correlation between the collected images and affective vocabulary was analyzed to understand the interplay between these two modalities in expressing consumer preferences. The findings revealed that the relationship between images and affective vocabulary could be analyzed in terms of ‘singularity/complexity’ and ‘abstraction/specificity.’ Participants demonstrated a cross-interactive relationship, expressing diverse visual images with single affective vocabulary, and conveying complex affective vocabulary with a single visual image. Furthermore, the study showed that abstract affective vocabulary could be visualized through specific visual images, and abstract visual images could be interpreted through specific affective vocabulary. These results indicate that images and affective vocabulary form a complementary relationship, contributing to a multidimensional expression and understanding of consumers’ subjective preferences. This study provides an in-depth understanding of consumer preferences through the integrated analysis of images and affective vocabulary. And suggests its potential as a foundational work, contributing to the development of effective communication strategies with consumers in the design field and the advancement of AI-based image generation technology.
