During the Japanese colonial period, the Korean youths who went into exile in China and enrolled in local universities and military academies overcame economic deprivation, harsh educational environments, and ethnic discrimination to master specialized knowledge, thereby contributing to national independence and subsequent state-building.
Research on Korean students in China Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Nanjing, as well as the demographics of students enrolled in Chinese military academies, Manchukuo(滿洲國) military academies, and National Foundation University(建國大學). However, existing scholarship remains confined to specific regional schools, specialized fields, or particular time periods and events, making it difficult to grasp the overall scale and comprehensive statistics. Future research must move beyond mere academic curiosity or personal ambition; it should reflect the multifaceted nature of their journeys—ranging from those who entered Chinese institutions as a revolutionary practice for the independence movement to those who sought political advancement by aligning with Japanese colonial rule.
Expanding the scope of research on these students is essential for mapping a critical axis of the intellectual landscape in modern and contemporary Korea. These individuals not only contributed significantly to the political, economic, and educational sectors during the national reconstruction but also played a central role in the establishment of the Korean military. Studying the ‘reception, dissemination, and institutionalization’ of their educational experiences and specialized knowledge serves as a cornerstone for intellectual history, elucidating the formation of modern Korean ruling elites and intellectual networks. To achieve this, the establishment of a comprehensive integrated information network on Korean students in China is urgently required.
