The discussion of “direct transcription(直書)” during the early Joseon revision of the Goryeoguksa (History of Goryeo, 『高麗國史』) was not confined to a scholarly debate over editorial form and historiographical conventions. Rather, it constituted a profoundly political issue, closely tied to the problem of securing political legitimacy for the revision of an established historical work. King Taejong and King Sejong sought to justify the revision project by identifying its perceived deficiencies with Jeong Do-jeon and denouncing him accordingly. Sejong’s own intervention in the debate over “jikseo” can likewise be understood within this context. By problematizing Jeong Do-jeon’s practice of “textual alteration(改書),” Sejong advanced the principle of direct transcription. Byeon Gye-ryang’s opposition to Sejong’s position, however, risked undermining the very legitimacy of the revision enterprise. Nevertheless, Sejong’s determination to proceed with the revision is clearly reflected in the preface written by Yun Hoe. In particular, by invoking the compilation of the Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian), the subsequent process of supplementation and correction, the preface sought to consolidate the justification for revising the Goryeoguksa while underscoring Sejong’s exceptional political and intellectual leadership in advancing the project. Byeon Gye-ryang’s arguments, by contrast, were omitted from the preface precisely because they did not serve to reinforce Sejong’s claim to political legitimacy.
