Motion and stereoscopic depth are two indispensable features for the visual system to register the spatial layout of dynamic optical inputs in three-dimensional space and time. Representations of these two features share a common set of areas along the dorsal stream of visual cortex, suggesting intimate interactions between neural substrates specialized for the two features. However, the reciprocal nature of encoding the two features has not been systematically studied. This study investigated the relationships between stereopsis and motion via two methods: psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). 1) In psychophysics, using a novel form of adaptation, we probed the perception of disparity- and direction-defined coherent surfaces in parallel before and after adaptation to a stimulus that moved in a single direction at a particular binocular disparity. Contrary to earlier findings, we found a strong asymmetry between motion and stereopsis: the detection of disparity signal after adaptation was more impaired when the test stimulus was moving in the adapted direction than in the non-adapted direction, whereas the test disparity hardly affected the detection of coherent motion. However, motion adaptation became dependent on disparity when we added another surface that was moving in the opposite direction at the opposite sign of disparity to those of the original adaptor, as in previous studies of contingent aftereffects. The observed asymmetric contingency between motion and disparity adaptation urges the reinterpretation of previously reported contingent aftereffects and suggests a corresponding asymmetry between neural mechanisms devoted to processing of motion and stereopsis in human visual cortex. 2) In the fMRI experiment, we measured fMRI responses while observers performed depth or motion discrimination task after adapting to an identical stimulus composed of a particular disparity and direction. The adaptation effects, which were defined by decreased fMRI responses compared to the ‘no adaptation’ condition, were observed with both task conditions in early cortical areas such as V1 and V2. In contrast, the dorsal area MT shows adaptation effects only for the motion discrimination condition. The results suggest that the brain activity to an identical visual stimulus changes depending on the observers’ task at hand and that this change is reflected in the later visual cortex than early areas. The current study offers psychophysical and neural methods to study reciprocal representations of stereopsis and motion. The paradigm may be also applied to other feature domains such as orientation or color.
