Research on Social Capital and Social Adaptation of Migrant Women from International Married migrant women represents a valuable human resource to our society. But only when they have appropriately adapted to our society can they fully lead their lives. The process according to which the social capital that these women possess exclusively and mutually gets adapted to society will depend upon the elements composing social capital. In other words, the social adaption of the married migrant women will change according to the level of the social capital they possess.
The migrant women’s social adaption is influenced by numerous factors, but among such, the most significant ones will be the social network these women possess exclusively and mutually, such as their trust and their participation. The analysis on the women’s personal characteristics, social capital and social adaption revealed the following characteristics.
First, the level of trust in women from international marriages was of a middle level. They showed quite a high level of trust when it came to cohabiting families. The women thus showed a high dependence in the families when they were living together.
Secondly, from a network point of view, it was revealed that when these women needed urgent help, they did not have the necessary institutions or people at their disposal to turn to for home violence or economic problems. Furthermore, they seemed to gather the necessary information or knowledge through television or acquaintances and friends.
Thirdly, analysis showed that the participation in their community activities or other organizations was quite low - as was expected. Nevertheless, their willingness to participate in their regional community if serious issues arose was high, showing that their awareness was equally significant. An inspection on the hypotheses of the influences of social capital on social adaption led to the following results.
First, trust among social capital influenced political adaption but not economic, social and cultural adjustment.
Secondly, networks present a significant factor in the economic, social and cultural adaption but not in the political one.
Thirdly, upon first analysis, participation did not seem to have an influence on social adjustment. But a more thorough analysis showed that for foreign women married to Koreans who attended church, this factor did play a role in the formation of social capital.
The research results concerning the social adaption of women from international marriage through their social capital can be discussed under the following points of view, including an academic and scholar one.
First, we can rearrange the theories on social capital and social adjustment from a political scientific standpoint. The concept of social capital has been actively researched in diverse fields for the past 10 years in Korea. However, only a few of these studies incorporate it within the field of social welfare policy, especially implementing social capital to migrant women married to Koreans or to those from multi-cultural societies. This research is thus significant, for it marks the beginning of such a stance. More research should be developed in the future on this topic from a diverse point of view. From such a perspective, this current study has had some outcomes.
Secondly, the re-organization of the components, characteristics and roles of social capital has allowed them to be used again in the future. Differences among scholars concerning this concept are still ongoing, but the main theory is closer to being more structured based on the results so far. We therefore need more divergent and categorized studies using social capital. This current analysis made it clear that further research is needed on the subject according to the recipients of policies.
Thirdly, the scientific investigation on the influences of each element of social capital on social adjustment has provided an opportunity to observe this from a political science point of view. However, such measuring has been difficult due to the fact that social capital is owned by each individual exclusively and mutually. This is due to a lack of research materials, thus it is therefore imperative that we develop an appropriate and reliable measurement index through further research on this matter.
Migrant women from international marriages are now seen as recipients of social integration (multi-cultural society), going beyond social adaption. However, a true multi-cultural society is only made possible when Korean society acknowledges their political, economic, social and cultural backgrounds. A closer look at this content reveals the following issues. In order to increase their social capital, the plans as shown underneath should be tried.
