      Environmental Background of the Upper Paleolithic in Korea

      The initial change from a warm to a cool temperate climate is estimated to have occurred during the period spanning 52-43 ka BP. Around 40 ka BP, the climate became noticeably cooler and dryer in comparison to the preceding period, with dry conditions becoming even more pronounced at around 30 ka BP. During the Last Glacial Maximum, the colder, dryer climate resulted in a grassland-forest landscape predominated by non-arboreal pollen. In the northeastern regions of the Korean Peninsula, Mammuthus-Coelodonta fauna was representative. After approximately 17-16 ka BP, the climate became relatively warmer than before, but overall environmental conditions were still cooler than those of today. This was also the period when the modern-type fauna currently inhabiting Korea began to form. With the onset of Marine Isotopic Stage 1, the natural environment transformed to a warm temperate climate.
