Rock slope has been designed according to the rock strength, the geological structure and engineering properties of rock mass. So this design caused many problems in excavation. It is generally thought that the stability of rock slopes has a good relation to the types of rock because the geological structure and the weathering profile in rock slope have an influence on it. The analysis of geological and structural characteristics of rock mass is very important. This is the final report of two years' study. In the first year of study, field data of rock slopes along highways and a database system, slope management system was built. Main factors of rock slope stability such as dips and strike of slopes and discontinuities, surface roughnesses of discontinuities, shear strength of discontinuities, slope geometry and the types of rocks were studied. The shapes of rock slope failure were classified into the type and the geological structure of rocks. We specially adopted the concept of Slope Mass Rating(SMR) that is a new geomechanical classification for rock slopes. In this study, stability evaluation of rock slope on highways, the analysis of the failure features and natures of rock slopes, the classification of the failure features according to types of rocks and analyzing factors for slope failure were conducted. Through these works, the essential information is provided in design and excavation of rock slopes.
