This study deals with the emotion of shame. It analyzes how personal feelings reveal social structures and acquire artistic meaning through the process of depicting shame. Shame is a social affect that is assigned within social relations and power structures, and therefore carries the characteristic of being difficult to articulate. When shame is uttered through the medium of art, it can acquire new meanings, and the act of speaking and visualizing that experience can itself become an aesthetic practice. Focusing on my own work, this thesis reinterprets shame as a driving force for artistic utterance and examines how drawing visualizes thinking and creates a basis for speaking.
Chapter 2 examines the concept of shame and its social functioning, drawing on the theories of Martha Nussbaum, Frédéric Gros, and Judith Butler. Society attaches shame to individual defects, while social structures such as gender norms and meritocracy intensify shame. By arguing that the process of articulating and interpreting shame allows us to question standards of normality and think critically, this chapter discusses the ethical significance of speaking shame. In doing so, it provides a theoretical foundation for relocating the discourse on shame to the level of social and structural issues.
Chapter 3 addresses how the affect of shame is visualized in my painting practice. Experiences of evaluation and stigmatization of appearance and the body are differentiated into complex emotions. The chapter analyzes how emotions such as sadness, self-censorship, and anger are represented through motifs such as crying, self-division, and exaggerated gestures.
Chapter 4 examines the medial methodology of drawing shame. It analyzes the process of exploring the formal expression of emotion based on the properties of xuan paper, my primary material, and the variation of drawings. In order to intensify the affect of shame, I explore the bleeding and absorption of xuan paper, and through experiments in composition and formal elements I investigate ways to convey emotions such as anger and sadness more clearly.
The significance of this study lies in linking artistic practice and shame, thereby expanding the meaning of shame in social terms and analyzing methods of visualization. When shame is artistically articulated, the marginal subject who once felt “unqualified to speak” can re-emerge as a speaking subject. Through the process in which thought changes through practice, and transformed thought again reshapes practice, the experience of shame is spoken again, or spoken otherwise. This process of utterance is concretized through experiments with xuan-paper drawing as well as various media and methods.
The act of speaking and visualizing shame becomes an opportunity to escape the confines of an inner, solitary emotion and to engage in an expansive practice of imagining and empathizing with the suffering of others. When shame is enacted as artistic utterance, it is reborn beyond an oppressive affect that enforces silence and withdrawal, as an artistic force that criticizes norms and opens up possibilities for new forms of relationality.
