Exorbitant Happiness in Olga Tokarczuk’sDrive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead

Abstract: Olga Tokarczuk’s thriller novel Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (2009 [2019]) claims happiness outside the orbit of patriarchal and anthropocentric Christianity. The novel’s protagonist, Janina Duszejko, kills poachers who are under the aegis of the local church and indiscriminately hunt the wild animals. Despite the moral ambiguity of her murders, Duszejko’s astrology advocates her wrath against the society that fails to protect the creatures and does not heed an elderly woman’s plea to save them. Her esoteric and exorbitant belief system empowers her to relish happiness that stems from her arduous struggle on behalf of the lives of the unprivileged creatures. Drawing on feminist theology and Sara Ahmed’s The Promise of Happiness (2010), this paper explores how Duszejko’s marginalization and her divine wrath enable her to develop an alternative belief system outside the androcentric and anthropocentric religion.
