지적장애에 대한 종합일간지 신문보도의 경향분석(1990-2010년) = Analysis of Newspaper Coverage on Intellectual Disabilities

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research analyzed articles about intellectual disabilities from January 1st, 1990 to December 31st, 2010 in 9 national newspapers, according to their external and contextual factors. The articles were searched through the Korea Integrated News Database System (KINDS, www.kinds.or.kr) by searching topic using the terms deficiency, mental retardation, and intellectual disabilities; articles which were found to be unrelated to intellectual disabilities were excluded. The research results show that the number and length of articles about intellectual disabilities increased yearly, along with the use of positive tone in the articles. In contrast, the articles were usually written in news format, in which accidents and incidents were simply listed, and the topic of the articles were also not varied. Therefore, in order for the newspapers to better represent intellectual disabilities, newspaper reporters need to have more interest and research about intellectual disabilitie. Also people who work to help people with intellectual disabilities and people with intellectual disabilities themselves must make an active effort to find their voice. Only when the interest of the readers and newspaper companies are combined, will articles with quality content be published.
