The purpose of this study is to investigate any differences by demographic characteristics in daily life stress, self-esteem, and life satisfaction among older adults living alone, and to examine the influence of daily life stress on self-esteem and life satisfaction among them, and to suggest basic data in policy and program development for them.
The samples were 400 older adults aged 65 and over living alone who attended 2 senior welfare centers and 3 senior clubs in Cheongju and Cheongwon. The survey was conducted for 2 months from March, 2014 to April, 2014. 313 copies were analized after excluding 87 copies with poor answers. SPSS V 18.0 was used.
The findings were as follows.
First (question 1), older women living alone had higher family stress. Older adults living alone without religion had higher economy stress and health stress. Also, older adults living alone with poor health, high age, low educational background, and low standard of living, and without job or house had higher daily life stress (economy stress, health stress, family stress) and lower self-esteem and life satisfaction.
Second (question 2), health stress and economy stress had significant negative influence on self-esteem among older adults living alone, while family stress did not have any influence on self-esteem among older adults living alone.
Third (question 3), health stress and economy stress had significant negative influence on life satisfaction among older adults living alone, while family stress did not have any influence on life satisfaction among older adults living alone.
This study suggested some implications and measures based on the above study results. Also, this study provided some limitations of study and suggestions for further studies.
