In order to examine the relationship between ego identity and career maturity of adolescent's, this study intended for second grade students of middle school and humanity high school.
This study tried to see if there is a difference in the ego identity and career maturity according to the sexual distinction and academic grade and to grasp if there is a meaningful difference in career maturity according to the level of ego identity status.
Based on the precedent studies and theoretical background, this study intended for the 437 students from a coeducational middle school and two humanity high schools in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do which were selected through sampling.
In this study, "the Korean styled examination of ego identity" which was developed by Park Ah-cheong (1996a) and corrected and complemented by Yi Seung-Guk (1999) was used as the measuring tools for the examination of ego identity.
The reliability of this examination sheet is 0.94 by Cronbach α coefficient and this sheet is made up of 48 questions in total to be evaluated by 4 examples.
The measuring tools of career maturity, which was developed recently by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training (KIVET) and Lim Eon and Kim Yun-kyeong (2001) in order to provide and measure the conception of career maturity suitable for middle school students and high school students in our country.
The reliability of this examination sheet is 0.93 by Cronbach a coefficient and this sheet is made up of 105 questions in total.
But this study used 70 questions in two subordinate realm to be evaluated by 4 point.
The problems to study were established as follows;
1. How are the ego identity of the youth expressed?
1-1. Is the any difference in the ego identity of adolescent's according to sexual distinction?
1-2. Is the any difference in the ego identity of adolescent's according to academic grade?
2. How are career maturity of adolescent's expressed?
2-1. Is the any difference in the career maturity of adolescent's according to sexual distinction?
1-2. Is the any difference in career maturity of adolescent's according to academic grade?
Collected data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).
This study got the average and standard deviation in order to grasp the general inclination of ego identity and career maturity of adolescent's, and used T-test to see the difference between ego identity and career maturity and according to sexual distinction and academic grade. Pearson's correlation analysis were used to see the relation between ego identity and career maturity and the regression analysis were used to see the relation between ego identity and career maturity more detail.
The result of data analysis are as follows;
1. The recognition level of adolescent's ego identity is low: adolescent's ego identity by sexual distinction had the significant difference, while adolescent's ego identity by academic grade doesn't have the significant difference.
In other ways, because girls' ego identity achievement is higher than the boys' (p<.05) and middle and high school students belong to adolescent's, we can see that both of them have significant recognition levels.
2. The adolescent's career maturity by sexual distinction doesn't have significant difference statistically, while the career maturity by academic grade has the significant difference.
In other ways, high school students' recognition level about adolescent's career maturity is higher than middle school students and there is few difference between boys and girls.
3. Ego identity and career maturity have relatively high statical interrelation.
Observing the career maturity at a side view of attitude and ability, the attitude of ego identity and career maturity is revealed to be related deeply (F=46.810, p<.001), and is especially revealed to be related closely to the future conviction, low-ranking of ego identity. The ability of career maturity is revealed to be statistically significant
(F=60.871, p<.001), and is revealed to be related closely to the future conviction like the attitude of career maturity.
In conclusion, we can see that systematic academic and career counseling is need from middle school because adolescent's levels of ego identity are similar and ego identity has a deep relation to careet maturity. All subordinating factors to ego identity is revealed to have a close relation to career maturity.
