We are living in information age that is rapidly changing with the development in science and technology. These efforts to develop science made mankind to focus on the importance of science education.
Then, what can be specific teaching method to reach the aim of science education? In this points, I insist that new teaching methods is the first thing we need to cultivate the men who are creative and self-willing in studying. Prior to development of men teaching methods we make the atmosphere for creative and self-willing. And, the teaching materials based on proper theory which is the foundation of the cultivating creative and talented men.
The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze the contents of the middle school science textbooks focused on the biology field of 7th education curriculum which was changed and implemented since 2000. To compare the 7th textbook which is revised to the external form, with organization of content about biology area of science textbooks substantially followed by the 7th curriculum.
The results of this thesis are as follow.
1. With the change of the general purpose from promoting creative problem solving ability into fostering sound outlooks on nature, education for the whole person in relation with scientific acquirements was emphasized, and research course and the side human wisdom changed their positions under sub-purposes. Additionally, the type of statement was changed from provider-oriented type of 'let someone have something' (instructor) into consumer-oriented type of 'have something' (student).
2. In the knowledge territory, the number of unit reduced, and deepening content was added into each units as the subject of deepening?supplement course. In the research territory, research was divided into research process (the base, unification research) and research activity, the research element was not defined, and the 7th curriculum included research 5 steps and embodied research field. It shows decrease in overall amount of educational contents and the tendency for the level of contents gets deteriorated.
3. It was categorized into 5 main areas, learning direction plan, data preparation & application, learning direction method, experiment ? practice direction, and deepening? supplement learning direction, and presented in details. Four items were presented in the deepening? supplement learning direction area as the subject of deepening? supplement program. It shows the intention to strengthen the spirit of open education and education for information literacy.
4. The contents in Earth Science section of the 6th curriculum were , in the 7th curriculum, distributed into the superior territory of the second and third grade contents with decreased units over all. This change corelates with the results that much of the contents in the 6th curriculum was removed and the degree of difficulty was readjusted downward, and the report that repeated contents were dropped for the reduction of total amount to be educated. The reduction of education contents is considered to be essential following the reduction of allotted time for scientific education.
