Due to the urbanization and industrialization in Korea, the percapita water consumption rate has been rapidly increasing, and the water supply systems do not function properly because of deterioration of the systems and inadequate management and also due to the increasing water pollution at various water resources. Hence it is required seriously to improve the schemes in operation and maintenance (O&M) for water supply system. The objective of this study is first to analyse the main cause of the problems in water treatment facilities and pipe systems in view points of design, construction and O&M and second, to provide a short-term countermeasure and long-term plan for the improved O&M schemes of the existing and future water supply system. Also, an experimental work and mathematical modeling was conducted to delineate the feasibility of bank filtration as a substituting intake system for emergent case.
