This study is a preliminary research on redesigns and remodeling for environmentally friendly housing. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of indoor thermal environment by having or not having the front balcony in apartment houses. The field measurements of the thermal elements were carried out at an ordinary house having the front balcony and a renovated house converting the front balcony into the livingroom. The measurement at two-subject houses were taken on simultaneously the 27th of May, 2001.
The indoor temperature showed 24.0~26.5℃(average 25.7℃) at the ordinary house having the front balcony and 24.5~27.5℃(average 26.3℃) at the renovated house without the balcony. The indoor temperature of the renovated house was 0.6℃ higher than the average of the ordinary house. The globe temperature ranged 22.0~27.0℃(average 25.6℃) at the ordinary house, and 24.0~28.0℃(averag 26.9℃) at the renovated house. The globe temperature of the renovated house was 1.3℃ higher than the average of the ordinary house. It was found that the ordinary house was on the whole in the comfortable condition except for the mid-day. In the renovated house, however, higher temperature continued throughout the day time due to no block-effect of solar radiation. So, the renovated house seemed to be lower energy efficient for refrigerating. From the results of this study, it is undesirable to remodel or convert the front balcony into the livingroom.
