『북간도』에 나타난 형식과 역사의 변증법 = A Study on the Dialectics of Form and History in North KanDo (北間島)

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the narrative structure of the novel North Kando (北間島) and investigate the thematic effects and author’s consciousness.
The main storylines of North Kando (北間島) are those of the two generations of the Lee family, the father Lee Changyun and his son Lee Jeongsu, to which the other characters’ storylines are connected. Though this novel covers four generations, all of the generations of the three major families do not act significantly. So it can not be said that North Kando (北間島) is a family-history novel.
The five characters of the Lee family are the representatives of the nationalist independence movement. As for Jang family, the first generation’s Jang Chideok acts like Lee Hanbok but the third generation’s Jang Hyeondo becomes a representative of the routine life. As for the Choi family, each generation acts so differently that we can not determine the family identity. In addition, considering that there are negative groups of Chinese power, the colonialist Japanese power and those who go with the current of that time, the oppositional structure of North Kando (北間島) becomes clear. This novel has a binary structure of the nationalists for independence movement and their opposites.
The binary structure intensifies the theme-effects, in combination with the specific narrative strategy of this novel. North Kando (北間島) freely uses the narrative pattern of ‘showing an episode and then telling its socio-historical circumstances as a background’. This pattern is widely used between sub-chapters, paragraphs or passages and sometimes it engenders some variations.
The effects of the narrative strategy using those patterns widely are as follows. First, the strategy makes it possible to include in one novel the entire span from the pre-modern times of the late 18th century to the end of the colonial period. Second, the strategy engenders some aesthetical effects. ⅰ) The narrative strategy makes it possible to set the long span and the broad space of North Kando into one novel without the composition of the one major long and wide storyline. ⅱ) It obtains the dramatical effects of showing form. ⅲ) It makes the semantic tension between the showing and telling parts. The third effect of the strategy is a aesthetical defect. It makes some gap between the story instance and the narrator-author’s discourse instance, which results in the lack of the description of the characters’ psychology and the inner relation of characters.
North Kando (北間島) figures the history of the nationalist independence movement. The scale of the history above mentioned is so large that narrating that history asks for a river novel but North Kando (北間島) is simply a novel. From this gap between the novel’s form and its overweight contents come the peculiar narrative strategy and its aesthetical effects. In this sense, it can be said that North Kando (北間島) is one significant example of the dialectics of form and history.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 안수길의 『북간도』가 보이는 서사구성상의 특징을 분석하고 그 위에서 주제효과와 작가의식을 검토하는 데 목적을 둔다.
기존의 평가와는 달리 『북간도』는 이 씨 4대에 걸친 가족사소설이 아니며, 주요 인물들의 가계를 통해 외세하의 올바른 삶의 방식을 대비적으로 제시하고 있는 것도 아니다.
『북간도』의 서사는, 이창윤과 이정수 2대의 행적을 주요 스토리라인으로 설정한 위에 그들과 관련된 인물들의 스토리라인이 결부된 구조로 파악된다. 세 가문을 놓고 보아도 1세대와 3세대만 비슷한 비중으로 등장할 뿐, 2세대는 최삼봉만이 4세대는 이정수만이 살아 움직이는 상태이다. 따라서 이 소설을 가족사소설의 범주로 파악하는 것은 적절치 못하다.
이 씨 집안 5인의 행적은 민족주의 독립운동세력의 전형적인 모습에 해당한다. 이는 작품 내 세계에서 이들이 영위하는 스토리에서 확인되는데 서술자－작가의 적극적인 규정이 더해진 점이 특징적이다. 장치덕 가문의 경우 1대인 장치덕은 이한복과 그리 다르지 않은 면모를 보이며, 3대 장현도에 와서 현실에 적응하는 일상인의 전형이 된다. 최칠성 가문의 경우 1~3대가 각기 자신의 삶을 사는 모습을 보여 일의적으로 규정할 수 없다. 여기에 더하여 작품 내 세계 한편에 부정적인 중국 세력과 일본의 식민 지배 세력, 친청 및 친일 성향의 인물들이 무더기로 존재함을 고려하면 『북간도』의 대립 구도가 명확해진다. 내용형식 면에서 볼 때 『북간도』는 민족주의적인 독립운동세력과 외세 및 그에 영합하는 세력의 이원적인 대립 구조를 띠고 있다 하겠다.
『북간도』의 이분법적 구성 방식은 이 소설의 독특한 서사 전략과 결합하여 주제효과를 한층 강화한다. 『북간도』는 하나의 에피소드를 보여주기 형식으로 제시한 뒤에 그러한 사건의 배경이 되는 사회역사적인 상황을 설명하는 방식을 작품 전편에 걸쳐 다양하고도 빈번하게 구사하고 있다. ‘에피소드 제시＋사회역사적 설명’ 패턴으로 요약할 수 있는 이러한 서사 전략은 몇 개의 절에 걸쳐 이루어지기도 하고, 미시적인 부분에서 구사되기도 하며, 효과를 달리 하는 변형 패턴을 낳기도 한다.
『북간도』의 서사 전략이 갖는 효과는 크게 세 가지로 말해볼 수 있다. 첫째는 근대전환기로부터 식민지 전기간에 걸치는 격동의 역사를 효과적으로 작품에 끌어들일 수 있게 했다는 점이다. 작가의 사회역사적 설명 욕구 및 민족주의 이데올로기 구현 욕망이 과도한 데서 기인한 만큼 부작용도 없지 않지만, 이러한 서사 전략이야말로 장편소설의 분량에 대하소설의 구도를 짜 넣는 데 효과적인 방식이라 하겠다. 둘째는 이와 연관된 것으로서 선이 굵은 긴 호흡의 스토리를 구성해야 하는 어려움을 피할 수 있게 해 주면서 나름의 소설미학적 효과를 구축했다는 점이다. 보여주기 형식이 갖는 극적 제시의 효과와 절과 절 사이에서 의미론적 긴장을 유발하는 효과가 그것이다. 셋째는 문제적인 것으로서, 스토리와 서술자－작가 언어의 괴리 및 그에 따른 의미상의 괴리라는 부정적인 효과를 들 수 있다. 구체적으로 이는 주요 에피소드에 있어서 인물의 심리나 인물들 상호간의 내적 긴장관계를 그리지 못하는 결과로 나타난다.
『북간도』는 장편소설의 분량에 대하소설에 걸맞은 시공간을 구현하면서 민족주의 독립운동세력의 역사를 형상화한 작품이다. 장편이라는 장르 형 ...
