This research, in an attempt to view the importance of the conflict solution through the communication in parent-children relationship in adolescent period when the conflict with the parent would possibly be deepened, was aimed at identifying the difference between the communication using a No-lose method and the communication without using No-lose method, among Active listening, I-message and No-lose methods. To that end, a Teaching·Learning process plan on communication using Active listening and I-message method in comparison group and the communication using No-lose method in experimental group was developed and applied to the chapter ‘Communication among Family Members’ of middle school’s Technology·Home economics. The subject of the research was W middle school in Gwangju with 9 classes totaling 366 students which were divided into two groups comprising the experimental group with 203 students and the comparison group with 163 students. And through pre-test and post-test, conversation, conflict, functional communication and satisfaction from the relationship with the parents were compared and analyzed and the evaluation of the class was also conducted.
The process of research was in accordance with ADDIE model. In analysis stage, the scope of learning required by the chapter, ‘Communication among Family Members’ was defined and the general characteristics of the learner were investigated through pre-test. And in design stage, the elements in Teaching·Learning process plan were selected and the specific goal of learning in three Teaching·Learning process plans was established. In the first plan, same plan was equally applied to experimental group and comparison group, with ‘The concept of Communication' in the first plan, ‘Well-Listening and Effectively Speaking’ was in the second plan and in the third plan for ‘Conflict Solution’ in conflict among the family members, Teaching·Learning process plan was designed to use the different conflict solution approaches by group. In development stage, Teaching·Learning data and ‘Communication for happy family life’ were developed. In implementation stage, Teaching·Learning process plan developed was applied to the class at the school. In evaluation stage, the effect on conversation, conflict, functional communication and satisfaction with the relationship between the parents and the adolescent children were identified with the comprehensive evaluation of the class through the post-test. To compare the effect on group-wide parent-children relationship, a paired sample t-test was conducted to the scores earned through pre-test and post-test, and to identify the difference in the effect after post-test between the groups, an independent sample t-test was conducted. The evaluation of the class was carried out through the survey, and the questionnaires totaled 351, excluding 15 unfaithful answers, were analyzed using SPSS Win 12.0.
In the wake of applying to the class, the effect of the class appeared in experimental group in all areas such as conversation, conflict, functional communication and satisfaction with the relationship between the parents and adolescent children, while in comparison group, a significant increase in post-test score appeared in conversation and functional communication. As a result of comparing the post-test result between the experimental group and the comparison group, the score earned by experimental group was higher than comparison group in the area of conversation and functional communication with the father. With regard to evaluation of the class, both two groups were more positively evaluated than average and no significant difference was appeared.
In the class of ‘Communication for happy family life’, conversation and functional communication with the parents were enhanced in both groups, and the communication using No-lose method in experimental group were effective in easing the conflict while enhancing the satisfaction with the relationship between the parents and children. The communication using No-lose method encouraged the conversation, helped ease parents' authoritarian attitude and led the children to positively take part in resolving the conflict, thereby boosting the solidarity between the parents and children. The adolescent children tended to have more conversation with the mothers than fathers, as well as more frequent functional communication. But the communication class through No-lose method appeared to be higher with the fathers, proving that the communication class with the fathers with relatively less communication and solidarity is effective in building an intimate relationship by increasing conversation and functional communication and in educational effect in relationship with the father. This research is expected to help improve the relationship with the parents through communication for the children in adolescent period in which the conflict with the parents may be further widened, as well as to be helpful for the teachers in communication class.
