우리나라 광,제조업부문 중소 사업체의 생존 및 성장: 실증분석 = Survival and Growth of Small and Medium-sized Plants in the Korean Mining and Manufacturing Sector: Empirical Analysis

This study examines the effects of plant size and age on the survival and growth of small and medium-sized plants in the Korean mining and manufacturing sector. The analysis period encompassed by the study is 1998- 2006. Empirical analysis is carried out with reliable micro-data which is collected from the Korean Mining and Manufacturing Survey of Statistics Korea. Empirical results indicate that an increase of 10% in the initial size of plant, on average, resulted in an increase of 1.06%~1.30% in its probability of survival, and also, a decrease of 0.82%~2.01% in its growth rate. In addition, an increase of 10% in the age of plant, on average, led to a decrease of 0.45%~0.47% in the survival probability and a decrease of 0.87%~1.95% in the growth rate. Therefore, the study provides strong evidence against Gibrat`s Law, but supports Jovanovic`s hypothesis. The study identifies several plant-specific and industryspecific characteristics which affect the survival and growth of small and medium-sized plants.
