This thesis examines how Korean and Chinese literati in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries understood the geographical knowledge introduced by Jesuit missionaries.
Jesuits presented their world maps with a clear missionary agenda: to undermine the Sinocentric belief entrenched in Confucian tradition. As long as Chinese literati considered Europe as a barbarian country, they would never accept European religion. If they knew the roundness of the earth, Jesuits thought, they could no longer insist that China was the center of the earth; If they were informed of other countries, especially of Christian Europe, they would admit Europe to be another noble civilization.
How did indigenous intellectuals respond to these messages? They accepted Jesuit geographical knowledge while rejecting its ideological and religious implication. They interpreted Jesuit knowledge with rich Chinese classical resources and assimilated it into Chinese tradition.
I discern two approaches to assimilating the foreign knowledge. First, cosmologists of the late Ming China and the 18th century Korea incorporated Jesuit geographical learning into neo-Confucian natural philosophy; they relied on the doctrine of qi 氣 when solving theoretical problems caused by the roundness of the earth; they deviced various cosmographical schema in which the foreign geography was mixed with the yin-yang cosmology. The cosmologists often used these schema to show the cosmological uniqueness of Chinese civilization on the ''global'' earth.
The kaozheng 考證 scholars of the Qing China, who criticized the "groundless" speculation of the Ming cosmologists, launched philological enterprise. They researched Chinese classical texts and found many passages that were similar to Jesuit geographical doctrines. With these classical ''evidences,'' they argued that the Western learning had originated in ancient China. After Mei Wending 梅文鼎 formulated ''the Chinese origin theory'' based on the similarity between the round earth theory and the several passages of the Zhou bi suanjing 周비算經, the Qing scholars tried to demonstrate the Chinese origin of the every piece of the Western learning.
With these two approaches Chinese and Korean literati could accept the foreign geographical learning without causing any fundamental rearrangement in the Chinese classical worldview.
