This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic features of the Modern Chinese construction “N + 一些.” Although the construction superficially appears to follow the pattern of “noun + indefinite quantifier,” the findings reveal that it functions as a distinct syntactic type in which the noun often assumes adjectival meaning depending on the surrounding grammatical environment.
Corpus-based observations show that “N + 一些” frequently appears in predicate position but may also occur as a complement, modifier, topic, or object. When used as a predicate, it commonly co-occurs with syntactic markers such as 更, 得, and 比, which require adjectival elements, indicating that the construction is constrained by syntactic environments that license adjectival interpretation. The noun in this structure is typically a disyllabic compound containing morphemes such as 氣, 性, 意, 力, or 感, which inherently express properties or states, thus facilitating its semantic transition into an adjectival role.
From a semantic perspective, nouns within the “N + 一些” construction activate interpretive features such as [+evaluative], [+attributive], and [+gradable], depending on both syntactic requirements and contextual conditions. In this construction, 一些 is not merely an indefinite quantifier but functions as a semantic mediator that modulates the scope of comparison, degree, and mitigation. In syntactically constrained environments, it primarily operates as a degree modifier, adjusting the gradability of the noun-turned-adjective. In more flexible or weakly constrained contexts, 一些 serves to soften the force of the expression or fine-tune its evaluative meaning. Moreover, in contexts with minimal syntactic constraints, 一些 may facilitate an adjectival reinterpretation of the noun or attenuate its semantic intensity, thereby enabling interpretations that remain pragmatically natural and discourse-appropriate.
Pragmatically, “N + 一些” extends beyond descriptive usage to serve discourse-oriented purposes such as attenuation of evaluation, politeness, and rhetorical reinforcement. Its use reflects the speaker’s intention to adjust tone and interpersonal stance, demonstrating a close interplay between semantic adjustment and pragmatic strategy.
