This paper focuses on 《A Collection of Poems》 published in September 1953, right after the Korean War ceasefire, on how the Chinese Communist Party government tried to create a justification for participation in the Korean War through slogans such as ‘Let’s fight against the United States’ and ‘Let’s aid North Korea’.
First, ‘Let’s fight against the United States’ is a Cold War slogan that externally declares the diplomatic direction of ‘Soviet unilateral’. In 《A Collection of Poems》, the very extreme attitudes of ‘friendship and ’anti-American‘ are well reflected. However, before participating in the Korean War, China did not want to establish international relations only by ideology. China was almost coercively organized into the Cold War order created by the hegemonic competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. From the Pacific War to the Korean War ceasefire, the CCP did not want hostile relations with the United States. Rather, prior to the formation of the ‘Alliance between China and the Soviet Union’ in February 1950, there were conflicts with the Soviet Union in various areas, including China’s Northeast issue.
Second, ‘Let’s help North Korea’ is a slogan that shows a willingness to protect peace through internationalist socialist solidarity. This slogan is persuasive because it gives legitimacy to participate in the Korean War, so there are many narratives on the subject of ‘Let’s help North Korea’ in 《A Collection of Poems》. It is noteworthy that motherhood is highlighted in this narrative. Through a narrative using Motherhood, 《A Collection of Poems》 tried to sublimate the sacrifices caused by participating in the war into “humanity” and inspire pride in completing the People’s Revolution. In reality, however, relations between North Korea and China were not always smooth. During the Korean War, there were conflicts over military command and incidents caused by Chinese People’s Support Army in North Korean territory immediately after the war ended. Nevertheless, the slogan ‘Let’s help North Korea’ was needed immediately after the end of the war because it required public consent for large-scale human sacrifices and material costs from participating in the Korean War, and crowd mobilization was continuously needed for economic development.
