This study presents an analytical examination of Pavel Haas (1899-1944) and his two song cycles, Čínské písně (1919), Op. 4 and Čtyři písně na slova čínské poezie (1944). Although both works adopt classical Chinese poetry as their textual basis and incorporate exotic poetic imagery, they are distinguished by the markedly different historical contexts in which they were composed and by their contrasting emotional and sonic structures.
The 1919 cycle Čínské písně, written shortly after the First World War, embodies a process in which the chaos and loss of the period are sublimated into images of nature. The three songs translate the sorrow, tranquility, and praise of beautiful landscapes found in Chinese poetry into a Western musical idiom. The vocal lines construct a naturally flowing melodic contour shaped by the inflection and meaning of the text. The piano accompaniment evokes impressionistic color through the use of parallel fourths and fifths, modal inflections, and resonant arpeggiated textures.
Completed in 1944 in the Terezín concentration camp, Čtyři písně na slova čínské poezie outwardly employs images of nature, the moon, and the unreachable homeland; yet beneath the surface lie concealed expressions of isolation, sorrow, emotional rupture, and the collapse of identity. The vocal writing exposes inner agitation through fragmented intonation, declamatory recitation, and restrained breathing, while the piano-through atonal harmonies, superimposed chords, irregular rhythms, abrupt metric changes, and pedal resonance-reflects emotional depths that extend beyond the vocal line. Notably, distinct four-note motives recur and undergo transformation across the first, third, and fourth songs in both the piano and vocal parts. These musical devices serve as symbolic elements that enhance the structural unity of the cycle and articulate the deeper emotional layers of the poetry.
Haas 's two cycles do not merely imitate the external imagery of Chinese poetry; rather, they illuminate the process by which the poetic sentiments of stillness, flow, distance, and return are reconfigured within the composer's historical reality and inner world. The voice functions as a medium that conveys the emotional nuances of the text in a speech-like manner, while the piano provides the sonic and structural framework. The interaction between these two layers ultimately shapes Haas's distinctive lyrical and acoustic sound world.
