The Buddhist vihāra has spread throughout Asia with Buddhism in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Central Asia as well as in Northeast Asia, being harmonized with local culture and establishing itself as a socio-cultural aspect of the region. Therefore, scientific information on the prototype of Buddhist vihāra of India in order to understand social culture as well as research on religious temples, architecture, and art in specific regions or countries in Asia, including Korea is needed. This study is an attempt to elucidate the origin and the early development of Buddhist vihāra in India, and the following conclusions were drawn: First, as Gotama Buddha made his disciples sure to observe the vasa(residence) during the vassa(rainy season), the institutional basis for the transition of the Buddhist saṅgha from the samāṇic tradition to the settled practice was laid, which was naturally served as the basis of the emergence of vihāra. Next, as a result of examining the historical context and references in Buddhist texts on the main concepts of avasa, ārāma, and leṇa, which have been suggested in relation to the origin of Buddhist vihāra, the results showed that avasa was temporary in terms of being used and dismantled as accommodation, and that leṇa is somewhat different from todays concept of vihāra in that it has developed into a hermit retreat. While ārāma, a permanent residential facility, should be regarded as the origin of Buddhist vihāra tradition that continues to this day. And finally, the development process of the early vihāras, that is, from ārāma to saṅghārāma and mahāvihāra, was divided into three main stages in consideration of dates, components, and functions, and the characteristics of the major vihāras corresponding to each stage were examined.
