청각은 매우 다양한 원인들에 의하여 와우 유모세포나 청각신경의 손상이 유발될 수 있고 비가역적 손상이 가해지는 경우 회복이 불가능한 난청이 유발된다. 이러한 청각손상을 치료하기 위한 방법의 하나로 와우 유모세포의 재생을 유도하기 위한 유전자치료법이 개발되어 발전하고 있다. 그러나 다른 기관의 질환치료를 위한 유전자 요법과 달리 난청에 대해서는 아직 실제적인 임상치료가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 이를 위해서는 유전자 주입에 의한 보다 명확한 세포재생효과가 입증되어야 할 필요가 있고 유전자 이동에 필요한 매개체에 대한 안전성 확립도 선행되어야 할 것이다. 그리고 현재까지의 연구결과를 종합하여 볼 때 유전자 치료나 세포 치료 모두 Corti 기관의 대다수를 차지하고 있는 비감각세포인 지지세포가 유모세포 형성을 위한 기질로서 필요하고 지지세포가 소실된 와우상태에서의 치료법 개발을 위해서도 지지세포들의 특성을 이해하고 분열 및 분화를 유도하는 기술이 연구되어야 할 것으로 생각된다.
