사교육이 중학생의 국어, 영어, 그리고 수학성취도에 미치는 영향 = The Effects of Private Tutoring on Korean, English and Mathematics Achievement for Middle School Students

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal effects of private tutoring on Korean, English and mathematics achievements using the data from the Korean Educational Longitudinal Study (KELS). For the analysis, the multivariate multilevel model (MMGM) was used. It accounts for the dependence of the three outcomes and thus improves the parameter estimates of the model. The results of this study are as follows: First, the within personal level correlations for the joint growth processes of Korean, English, and mathematics achievements are statistically significant, indicating the need to adopt the MMGM instead of three separate univariate models for the data. Second, the private tutoring effects are statistically significant except for two cases: hours spent being tutored in Korean and exposure to private tutoring in mathematics. Hence, overall, students who receive more private tutoring have higher scores in Korean, English and mathematics achievements than those who receive less, regardless of the subjects and the types of private tutoring. However, the interaction effects between year and private tutoring variables are not statistically significant except for two cases: exposure to tutoring in Korean and expenditure on private tutoring in English. Thus, in general, in terms of growth of students`` achievements in the three subjects, there are no longitudinal effects of participating in private tutoring.
