A History of the Korean People을 중심으로 게일의 한국사 인식에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. Korean Sketches, The Vanguard, Korea in Transition과 여러 2차 자료들을 참고하였다.
A History of the Korean People에서 단군부터 조선의 멸망까지의 역사를 서술범위에 넣고 있으며, 인물을 중심으로 각 시대를 읽고 있다.
A History of the Korean People은 한국인을 대상으로 했다가 보다는 서양인 독자를 대상으로 하였다. A History of the Korean People이 The Korea Mission Field에 연재되었기 때문이다. 또한 A History of the Korean People은 문학적인 서술이 아주 돋보인다.
A History of the Korean People에서 크게 한국사를 5개조의 왕조로 시대구분하고 있다.
A History of the Korean People을 저술하였다.

This paper intends to study on J. S. Gale's recognition of Korean History, especially through one of his writings, A History of the Korean People. Besides, his other works, Korean Sketches, The Vanguard, Korea in Transition and other secondary materials are referred.
Gale was born in Canada in 1863, graduated from Toronto University in 1888, and was sent to Korea as a missionary by YMCA. He published a Korean-English dictionary, translated the Bible into Korean, Korean literature into English and English literature into Korean. He also served as a pastor in Youn Dong church and at the same time was known as a distinguished scholar in Korean Studies among missionaries. He left Korea in 1927, arrived at Bath in England and there he passed away in 1937.
In A History of the Korean People, he dealt with from Ch'i Tzu(箕子) to Chosen(朝鮮) focusing on figures in each time. He attached great importance to literary men as well as kings, mentioned Ch'i Tzu Chosen(箕子朝鮮) as a historical fact. When he wrote the history of Three Kingdoms, he put Shilla(新羅) on the center. He laid stress on superiority of Buddhist civilization of United Shilla(統一新羅), placed high value on religion and culture rather than politics during Koryo Dynasty(高麗). He thought that Chosen Dynasty was on the downgrade in 16th century, casting her fortune with other oriental countries.
His A History of the Korean People could be supposed to be written for westerners, not for Korean, for it was serialized in The Korea Mission Field. And it was written in a narrative style. It agrees with one of today's trends in historiography.
In his book, A History of the Korean People, he divided Korean history into 5 epoches: Foundations, the Three Kingdoms, United Shilla, Koryo and Yi Dynasty. And then he wrote them again in detail dividing them century by century. The way he classified epoches means that he classified them as a matter of convenience. Richard Rutt who gave footnotes to A History of the Korean People used historical positive method.
Gale paid attention to the mentality of Korean people. The fact that he laid stress on religion, literature, and mentality of Korean people indicates that he opened the field of Korean cultural history. He wrote A History of the Korean People with the purpose of mission. The most impressive thing is that he showed us religious inclusivism beyond Christian Ecumenism. Surely he stood on a different field comparing with other missionaries of the time. Without degrading oriental religions and cultures, he understood, studied and accepted them. He understood the occupation of Korea by force with a view of Social Darwinism. In 1920's when he wrote this book, he showed an aspect of Religious Inclusivism. He accepted Oriental culture and perceived that Korean people were not happy to be dominated by western powers. In that point, it can be assumed that he gradually gave up sense of superiority of western culture.
