The illness tends to be most revere with advancing age and in the presence of malignancy or immuno-suppression.
In this study, we reviewed 111 admitted cases of herpes zoster to elucidate the clinical characteristics of herpes zoster. The age and sex distribution, predilection site, association disease, monthly incidence, complication and method of treatment were studded.
The results were as follows : The age distribution was in the range of 5∼89 years old belong most prevalent in the 7th decade and the ratio of male(46%) to female(54%) was approximately 1:1.17. The most common anatomical distribution was thoracic dermatome (50.5%), followed by trigeminal(26.1%), cervical(9.0%), lumbar(6.3%), sacral(0.9%), and multiple dermatome(2.7%) involvement.
Associated diseases of herpes zoster were observed in 42 patients(37.8%) and frequencies, in descending order, were gastritis(13.5%), hypertension(6.3%), malignancy(6.3%), diabetes mellitus(5.4%), and so on. There was no statically significant monthly or seasonal variation in the incidence of herpes zoster. During admission, the most common complication of herpes zoster was eye complication(8.1%) followed by Ramsay Hunt syndrome(1.8%), secondary infection(1.8%). The methods of treatment was net so influence on duration of admission
