In the organic wastewater containing phenol, it is very difficult to remove the phenol by the conventional activated sludge process because of its strong toxicity.
This study was to treat the wastewater containing phenol by use of microorganisms.
The phenol degrading bacteriaa were selected and developed from the industrial wastewater and sludges and various kinds of soils. And the phenol was able to degrade easily at its concentration up to 1000 ppm.
In the batch reactor, the rate of phenol degradation was increased and to be constant after some lag time. And the period of removal of the phenol was lengthened with intial phenol concentration due to the lag time of microorganism adaptation.
