The experiments were conducted to observe the prevalent diseases in the vegetable growing areas in Jeon-bug province, and to determine proper planting time in Jeonju, Jeongeup and Gochang by planting at the 10-day intervals from July 20th to September 1st in 1980. Disease incidences on chinese cabbage and radish were investigated for 90 days after planting in the fields with no application of fungicides, screen-covet· at early stage of growth, and fungicide treatment. The population of virus-vector· aphids and soil-born bacterial pathogens, and weather factors were also investigated in the areas.
1. Virus disease, white rust, alternaria leaf spot, dampping off, root rot, and black rot were prevalent in radishes in that order, while downy mildew, white spot, bacterial soft rot, virus disease, and dampping off were prevalent in chinese cabbages in that order.
2. In serological tests of 300 samples with infected radish and chinese cabbage, turnip mosaic virus was 53%, cucumber mosaic virus 23ft and double infection of turnip mosaic virus plus cucumber mosaic virus 7%.
3. Disease incidences were lower as planting was delayed. However, August 20 was proper planting time for radish, whereas August 1() was proper pianting time for chinese cabbage.
4. Screen-cover at the early stage of growth showed the least incidence of diseases and good production of vegetables.
5. Xanthomonas sp., Erwinia sp., Pseudomonas sp., Corynebacterium sp., and Agrobacterium sp., were prevalent from soil samples in the order.
6. Of virus vectors, Myeus persicae, Aphis gossypii, Aphis piraxola, Aulacorthum solani, and Lipaphis erysimi were found, and M. persicae was the most prevalent specis. The peak of vector-aphid population was during the period of middle and last August.
